2,700-Year-Old Marijuana Stash Found in China

Posted by on November 29, 2008

According to this story, researchers claim to have located the world’s oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly “cultivated for psychoactive purposes,” rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

This story goes to reinforce the fact that human beings have, for centuries and even millennia, been using natural substances of various sorts to try and alter their brain chemistry — their psychology, if you will.

The Wal-Mart Trampling & Mob Psychology

Posted by on November 29, 2008

The horrific incident at a Long Island, New York Wal-Mart, in which a store clerk was trampled to death by a crowd that broke down the doors to get in on the first day of after-Thanksgiving sales, causes many to wonder, “What has become of people today?”  Commentators ponder whether individuals in modern society have become coarsened or more brutal or simply more uncaring about their fellow human beings.

There might or might not be some truth to the idea that people in past times, or perhaps in other parts of America or the world, would not have acted as did the members of that Wal-Mart crowd.  The overriding truth of the situation is that the Wal-Mart incident was a manifestation of mob behavior.

Psychologists and sociologists have long known about the “madness of crowds.”  They have done experiments that show that individuals in a crowd will take their cues from the people around them.  If someone is lying bleeding on the pavement and the first person to happen by stops to offer help, then other people will stop to assist, too. But if the first one or two or three people walk on by, then everyone who follows will pass on by as well.

It is a truism that individuals in a mob will do things — loot, injure, even kill — that they would never do on their own, even if they are assured there will be no consequences.  The psychological term for this mechanism is the “risky shift.”

Nevertheless, it is also true, as shown by the injured-person-on-the-pavement example, that individuals can become, at least temporarily, the “leaders” in a crowd, whether for good or bad.  Would the outcome of the Wal-Mart trampling incident have been different if, among the surging mob, there was one individual who realized what was happening and shouted, “Stop, people, you’re killing that man.  It isn’t worth it!”  We will never know, but in history we do have examples where one person has changed the course of a mob surge.

Let’s hope that what happened in Long Island yesterday will not be repeated this holiday season. And more so, let’s hope it gives more pause for thought as to the potentially dangerous psychology that takes hold of human beings in a crowd.  It is a psychology that can be changed, many times, simply by a leader who emerges to direct energies toward our better natures as individuals.

Reasons To Consider Hypnosis to Quit Smoking

Posted by on November 27, 2008

Hypnosis To Quit Smoking Video

Okay, you’ve tried it all: the gum, the patches, the pills.  You’ve even tried going cold turkey.  But you failed.  You want to quit; you’re convinced you must quit, not only for the health reasons but for social and financial reasons as well. Yet you are ambivalent about your chances for success.

Psychological and Behavioral Therapy

Hypnotherapy to quit smoking helps the smoker change the way they think about smoking. Hypnosis helps change the way we think about smoking not only on the conscious level, but on the subconscious level as well. One study shows the individuals using several sessions of hypnotherapy had a 66% success rate at giving up cigarettes.

How It Works

Nicotine works on the cholinergic pathways of the brain.  It gives your body a wake-up call, it re-energizes you and gives you the ability to focus and increases reaction time. These characteristics are essential to your livelihood.  Hypnotherapy helps you quit smoking by substituting healthy thoughts and behaviors that will allow you to be alert, focused and energized without the need of chemicals.

Solution for Withdrawal Symptoms

Hypnosis plants behavioral strategies to cope with situations that trigger your desire to smoke. Smoking is often tied to daily rituals.  Perhaps you smoke after every meal, or while having a cup of coffee.  Maybe you smoke at certain times of the day because that’s when your buddies smoke and you can chat with them and have a cigarette.

Instead of fighting off the over-whelming urge to smoke after a meal, you will have the behavioral solution at the ready. Quitting smoking takes more than sheer will power, hypnosis to help quit smoking—offers solutions to those smoking triggers.

A study by University of Washington researcher, Dr. Joseph Barber, found that stop smoking hypnotherapy had been particularly effective.  Dr. Barber found that for a single session of hypnotherapy to quit smoking 25% of the participants remained non-smokers after a 6-12 month period.  Of the participants who had multiple sessions of hypnotherapy to quit smoking, 66% were non-smokers after a 6-12 month period.

Hypnotherapy is a powerful method to help you become a successful non-smoker.  Whether you choose a single session or multiple sessions, hypnotherapy will contribute to your success. Used alone or in tandem with nicotine replacement medications, hypnotherapy increases you chances for success.

Secrets Of The Subconscious Mind Revealed

Posted by on November 27, 2008

Our subconscious lies in uncharted territories of our brain and most us have not the ability nor the mental vision to fathom how it exists, what it does and which part of our cortex spawns it. Coined and first defined by the famous and one of the first to be in the field of psychology, one Pierre Janet, who in his studies found that the human mind has a hidden level of awareness and some sort of mechanical response and storage system that he called the ‘automatism’ of the human mind. He found that even under deep hypnosis, when the conscious mind was rendered inoperable, the subconscious was something he could talk to. Within it was everything he needed to know about the subject; his personality, his traits, his memory and his cognitive knowledge, which was amazing. The discovery triggered a revolution that was further heralded by famous scientists like Sigmund Freud and Fredrick Allen Soho.

This meant that the concentration on the conscious mind has been misguided; the true power, the one dominant factor within the mind, the one that defines the human soul and the human spirit is the subconscious mind. Only then was the power of the subconscious mind realized. Since then, science has been tirelessly and desperately, seeking ways and means to reach, directly or indirectly, the subconscious mind. Tinkering around with stimulants which resonate with the cortical response systems within specific lobes in the brain, science has discovered several methods to release the power of the subconscious mind.

They include autogenics, affirmation messages and stimulation, biofeedback, magnetic field induction, binaural beats, traditional and advanced forms of hypnosis and subliminal messages. These methods of delving into the recesses of the subconscious have one singular purpose, and that is to find a way to unlock the true power of the brain. Till this day, science has no idea, no clue, stabbing in the dark when it comes to neurology - the brain is only active at levels between 5 to maybe 20% (in some individuals) and the mammal family have certain similarities with the animals around us. Science has discovered that certain parts of the brain which are similar to dolphins’ have areas which could potentially grant us the power of near-psychic ability and sound manipulation.

Once we are able to understand how to truly manipulate the subconscious can the unbelievable be a reality for us. For now, science, with these methods, has the ability to give us super states of the mind - which means we can conquer things which seem to be unassailable in the past, meaning we can kick bad addictions, make us smarter, understand complicated calculations within moments and even adopt a third or even fourth language within minutes. These are all possibilities with the technology that is available now and tapping into the power of your subconscious mind is what matters now for the industry of self development.

Don’t hesitate!
